The nearest plant to Gustav’s path is located just over 200 miles north of New Orleans in Canton, Mississippi. That Nissan plant is the one that produces a large number of Altima sedans, but it also manufactures many minivans, SUVs and pickup trucks. This is also the same plant that was damaged during Hurricane Katrina three years ago. For nearly three days, the Canton plant was shut down. “We learned a lot from that experience and are setting up accordingly,” said a Nissan spokesperson about the current preparations for Gustav.

Some of the preparations for the Canton plant include emergency alarms to warn employees in case of approaching dangers, plans to contact local radio stations so they can inform the community of plant closings and phone numbers so employees can call and check the plant’s status. Nissan is also cleaning up any loose debris around the Canton plant for extra safety in high winds.

You might not think that antidepressants impair your ability to drive, but apparently that’s not true. A recent study found that drivers who take antidepressants (Prozac, Zoloft, etc.) are more likely to have impaired driving skills than those who don’t take these medications. Holly Dannewitz from the University of North Dakota conducted the study. Along with some researchers, she asked 60 volunteers to participate in a driving simulation. One group took at least one antidepressant beforehand while another group took nothing. During the simulation, they did simple driving tasks – braking, steering, adhering to traffic signals, etc.

The study found that the drivers who took an antidepressant before the test were much more impaired than the other group. Their concentration was off and their focus was gone. In some cases, they even had less control over their car.

The findings were presented at the American Psychological Association in Boston.

As with every Labor Day Weekend, New Jersey (along with most other states in the nation) crack down on drunk driving. They put many more police officers on the road to patrol the highways for drivers under the influence of alcohol. This year is no different.

On August 15, New Jersey began its statewide crackdown by adding many more traffic officers to the highways. With gas prices as high as they are and an uncertain economy, more residents are expected to stay close to home this year, making the highways more crowded and dangerous than usual. “That’s why it’s imperative that all driers remain safe and sober,” explained the director of the state Division of Highway Traffic Safety, Pam Fischer.

This year’s campaign, titled “Over the Limit, Under Arrest” (pretty catchy if you ask me), involves a number of checkpoints throughout the state.

According to a recent poll, though, nearly 70 percent of NJ drivers are pleased with the crackdown. They listed drunk driving as the top priority for the state and felt that police officers should enforce the laws more efficiently.
